How to Choose the Right Writer for Your Project or Business
Finding content writers that you immediately trust and feel ‘get’ your project can be tricky. Trickier still is choosing who you will award your project to.
If you are on this page, you may be starting to compile your list of potential writers. I want you to choose the best writer for your project. Below are a few tips to help you out.
Do you Speak my Language?
Ask your potential copywriter what they know about your market or industry already. If their general knowledge encompasses your industry, or better yet, if they already have a handle on the lingo and jargon used in your industry, then you’re on to a winner. If they aren’t already immersed in or understand your industry, what would it take to get them up to speed?
Check Their Writing Skills
If they have a portfolio available, look through it and analyse their mastery of the English language. Does it flow? Is it punctuated correctly? Are there typos or spelling mistakes? For further peace of mind, send your potential writer a couple of questions. I’ve been sent short paragraphs to re-write. You will know if the writer’s style is along the lines of what you want. Don’t be afraid to ask them if they can change the style of writing to be more casual or more formal. They want to deliver writing that is exactly what you need. Your direction and requests should be valued by them from the very beginning.
Unique Content is a Must
This tip could fit in with writing skills, but it is important enough to have its own point. Look for writers who guarantee their work is original and not plagiarised. If you publish a blog your writer has prepared for you, and it is not original and unique content, you are going to be slammed by Google for having duplicate content. If any of your readers discover it isn’t original content, they’re going to lose trust in you and your credibility is going to flatline. When you send your writer a writing task with questions or a writing task, keep an eye on how they respond to plagiarism. When you receive content from your writer, always run it through a plagiarism checker. I recommend copyscape.
